Kpandae, a town in Ghana’s Northern Region, sits at approximately 8.4688°N latitude and -0.0113°W longitude, placing it close to the border with Togo. The terrain is gently undulating savanna, typical of the region, with an elevation generally below 300 meters. This relatively flat landscape facilitates air stagnation, particularly during the dry season. Kpandae is not directly adjacent to a major body of water, though the Oti River flows nearby, influencing local humidity but not significantly impacting large-scale wind patterns. The surrounding area is predominantly agricultural, characterized by subsistence farming and increasingly, commercial cultivation of crops like yam, maize, and shea. While Kpandae itself isn’t heavily industrialized, the broader Northern Region experiences some small-scale processing of agricultural products, contributing to localized particulate matter. The urban-rural gradient is pronounced; Kpandae represents a market town serving a network of smaller villages, meaning that transport – often involving older vehicles – plays a significant role in the local economy and, consequently, air pollution. Dust from unpaved roads and agricultural activities is a constant factor, exacerbated by the region’s susceptibility to harmattan winds blowing from the Sahara. This combination of factors creates a unique air quality profile for Kpandae.
Kpandae experiences a distinct tropical wet and dry climate, profoundly influencing its air quality. The dry season, roughly November to March, is typically the period of poorest air quality. Harmattan winds carry substantial amounts of Saharan dust, increasing particulate matter concentrations. Low humidity and stable atmospheric conditions during this time trap pollutants near the ground. January and February are particularly challenging months for those with respiratory sensitivities. The transition period, March to May, sees increasing rainfall which begins to wash away dust and suppress particulate matter, offering a temporary improvement. The wet season, June to October, generally presents the best air quality, with frequent rainfall effectively cleansing the atmosphere. However, increased humidity can also promote mold growth, potentially triggering allergic reactions. September and October, towards the end of the wet season, can see a slight uptick in localized pollutants due to increased agricultural activity as farmers prepare for harvest. Sensitive groups – children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing respiratory conditions – should limit strenuous outdoor activity during the dry season and monitor their health closely. Avoiding peak traffic hours is also advisable.
