Douentza, nestled within the Mopti Region of Mali, occupies a geographically significant position on the edge of the Sahel, a transitional zone between the Sahara Desert and the Sudanian Savanna. Located at approximately 14.9950° latitude and -2.9667° longitude, the town sits at an elevation of roughly 330 meters (1,083 feet) above sea level, contributing to a relatively open and exposed landscape. The surrounding terrain is predominantly characterized by gently undulating plains and sparse vegetation, typical of the Sahelian ecosystem. While Douentza itself lacks immediate proximity to major rivers, it draws water from seasonal streams and relies on groundwater resources, making water availability a crucial factor influencing local activities. The urban footprint is small, reflecting a primarily rural character, with a gradual urban–rural gradient extending outwards into agricultural lands. These lands are vital for subsistence farming, primarily cultivating millet, sorghum, and maize, and contribute to localized dust emissions during planting and harvesting seasons. Further afield, the landscape transitions into the more arid expanse of the Sahara, influencing regional wind patterns. The town’s location, therefore, means it’s susceptible to dust intrusions from the north, particularly during periods of strong Harmattan winds. The lack of significant industrial activity within Douentza itself means that air pollution sources are largely related to biomass burning for cooking and heating, vehicular emissions from limited transport, and fugitive dust from agricultural practices and unpaved roads. The open nature of the surrounding landscape allows for relatively good dispersion of pollutants, but also exposes the population to external sources.
Douentza’s air quality is inextricably linked to its distinct wet and dry seasons. The dry season, spanning roughly November to May, presents the most significant air quality challenges. During this period, reduced rainfall and increased temperatures lead to exceptionally dry conditions, fostering widespread dust generation. Strong Harmattan winds, originating from the Sahara, frequently transport large quantities of fine particulate matter into the region, significantly impacting visibility and respiratory health. Temperature inversions, common during the cooler nights of the dry season, can trap pollutants closer to the ground, exacerbating local air quality. The months of January and February are typically the most challenging, with increased dust events and potential for respiratory irritation. Conversely, the wet season, from June to October, brings a period of relative improvement. Rainfall washes away accumulated dust, and increased humidity reduces the generation of new particulate matter. However, biomass burning for agricultural purposes, particularly after the harvest, can still contribute to localized smoke pollution. The monsoon winds, while bringing rain, can also occasionally carry pollutants from distant sources. Sensitive groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions, should exercise caution during the dry season, limiting outdoor activities during peak dust events and ensuring adequate ventilation indoors. During the wet season, while generally better, vigilance regarding smoke from agricultural fires remains important, particularly in rural areas surrounding Douentza. The interplay of wind patterns, temperature, and rainfall dictates the fluctuating air quality throughout the year.
