Zemamra, nestled within the Casablanca-Settat region of Morocco, occupies a unique coastal position approximately 60 kilometers northeast of Casablanca. Its coordinates (32.6215, -8.7023) place it on a relatively flat plain bordering the Atlantic Ocean, a significant factor influencing its microclimate and air quality. The surrounding landscape is characterized by a gradual transition from coastal dunes and sandy beaches to gently rolling agricultural lands, primarily dedicated to cereal cultivation and vegetable farming. This proximity to agricultural zones introduces potential sources of particulate matter, particularly during planting and harvesting seasons, as well as from fertilizer application. To the west lies the expansive Atlantic, providing a natural ventilation pathway that can disperse pollutants, but also introducing marine aerosols. Inland, the terrain rises subtly, eventually merging with the foothills of the Middle Atlas mountains, though these are distant enough to not exert a dominant influence on Zemamra’s immediate weather patterns. The urban–rural gradient is relatively smooth; Zemamra itself is a small town, and the surrounding area is predominantly rural, with scattered villages and agricultural holdings. The absence of major heavy industries within Zemamra itself mitigates some pollution risks, however, the town’s connection to the larger Casablanca-Settat economic hub means it can be affected by transboundary pollution events. The elevation is low, averaging around 10 meters above sea level, which can exacerbate temperature inversions under certain meteorological conditions, trapping pollutants closer to the ground.
Zemamra’s air quality experiences a distinct seasonal cycle driven by prevailing winds and temperature patterns. The dry season, spanning roughly from April to October, is generally characterized by clearer skies and improved air quality due to consistent Atlantic breezes that effectively disperse pollutants. However, agricultural activities intensify during this period, leading to localized increases in particulate matter from field operations and fertilizer use. Summer months (July-August) can see periods of stagnant air, particularly during heatwaves, which can trap pollutants and create uncomfortable conditions. The wet season, from November to March, brings increased rainfall, which naturally helps to cleanse the atmosphere by washing away particulate matter. However, this period also sees a rise in humidity, which can exacerbate respiratory issues for sensitive individuals. Fog, common during the winter months, can significantly reduce visibility and trap pollutants near the ground, creating localized air quality concerns. Temperature inversions, where a layer of warm air sits above cooler air, are more frequent during the cooler months, hindering vertical mixing and leading to pollutant accumulation. Spring (March-May) and Autumn (September-November) represent transitional periods with variable air quality, influenced by shifting wind patterns and temperature fluctuations. Individuals with respiratory conditions, such as asthma, should be particularly cautious during periods of fog and temperature inversions, and during peak agricultural activity. Outdoor exercise is generally best enjoyed during the drier months, avoiding periods of intense agricultural work or stagnant air.
