Figuil, nestled in the Nord Region of Cameroon at coordinates 9.7667°N, 13.9667°E, is a town characterized by a relatively flat topography typical of the Benue River basin. The surrounding landscape is predominantly savannah grassland, transitioning into gallery forests along the numerous seasonal streams and the Logone River, which lies to the east. With an elevation generally below 300 meters, Figuil experiences minimal altitudinal influence on its climate and air quality. The town’s urban character is developing, with a growing concentration of residential areas and commercial activity around the central market. Agriculture dominates the surrounding rural areas, primarily subsistence farming of crops like maize, millet, and groundnuts. This agricultural activity, while vital to the local economy, contributes to particulate matter pollution through land preparation, harvesting, and the burning of agricultural residue. The urban-rural gradient is fairly sharp, with a noticeable increase in dust and vehicle emissions as one moves closer to the town center. The proximity to Chad, across the Logone River, also means transboundary movement of dust and potential pollutants. The prevailing winds, generally from the southwest during the rainy season and northeast during the dry season, play a crucial role in dispersing or concentrating pollutants within the town.
Figuil’s air quality follows a distinct wet-dry seasonal pattern, dictated by the West African Monsoon. The dry season, roughly November to May, witnesses the poorest air quality. Harmattan winds, originating from the Sahara, carry substantial amounts of dust and particulate matter southward, significantly increasing PM10 and PM2.5 levels. January and February are typically the most challenging months, with reduced visibility and increased respiratory issues. Temperature inversions, common during the cooler nights of the dry season, trap pollutants near the ground, exacerbating the problem. The onset of the rainy season in June brings a dramatic improvement. Rainfall effectively washes away dust and suppresses particulate matter. However, increased humidity can promote mold growth, potentially triggering allergic reactions. July to September offers the cleanest air, with consistent rainfall and wind dispersal. October sees a transitional period, with decreasing rainfall and a gradual build-up of dust. Sensitive groups – children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing respiratory conditions – should limit outdoor activity during the peak of the dry season and consider using masks. Monitoring local weather patterns and avoiding strenuous activity on dusty days is crucial for maintaining respiratory health.
