Pervomaisk, nestled within the Luhanska Oblast of eastern Ukraine, occupies a geographically significant position within the Donets Basin, a region historically defined by its coal mining and heavy industry. Located at approximately 48.63° N, 38.56° E, the city sits on a relatively flat terrain, characteristic of the broader steppe landscape that dominates this part of Ukraine. The elevation is modest, averaging around 180 meters above sea level, contributing to a tendency for pollutants to accumulate, particularly during periods of atmospheric stability. The surrounding landscape is a mix of agricultural fields – predominantly wheat and sunflower – and remnants of industrial zones, reflecting the region’s economic history. While Pervomaisk itself is a relatively small urban center with a population of around 36,000, it’s situated within a broader industrial belt stretching along the Donets River, impacting regional air quality. The city’s proximity to this belt means it’s susceptible to pollutants originating from larger industrial facilities. The urban–rural gradient is gradual, with agricultural land quickly surrounding the city limits. The absence of significant natural barriers, such as mountains, further exacerbates the potential for pollutants to spread across the region. The climate, a humid continental type, with cold winters and warm summers, influences atmospheric mixing and dispersion patterns, often leading to stagnant air conditions during certain times of the year. The relatively flat topography and surrounding agricultural and industrial land use combine to create a setting where air quality is particularly sensitive to local emissions and broader regional influences.
Pervomaisk’s air quality experiences a distinct seasonal cycle heavily influenced by meteorological conditions. Winter, spanning roughly November to March, often presents the most challenging period. Cold temperatures and frequent temperature inversions trap pollutants close to the ground, leading to increased concentrations of particulate matter and other emissions from residential heating (often coal-based) and industrial activity. Fog, common during these months, further restricts atmospheric mixing, compounding the problem. Spring (April-May) brings a gradual improvement as temperatures rise and wind speeds increase, dispersing pollutants more effectively. However, agricultural activities, including the use of fertilizers and machinery, can introduce localized pollution episodes. Summer (June-August) generally offers the best air quality, with warm temperatures promoting good atmospheric mixing and frequent rainfall helping to cleanse the air. However, periods of intense heat can lead to ozone formation, a secondary pollutant. Autumn (September-October) sees a return to more challenging conditions as temperatures cool and the agricultural season winds down, with harvest activities contributing to dust and particulate matter. Sensitive groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions, should exercise caution during winter and early spring, limiting outdoor exposure on days with visibly poor air quality. During the warmer months, awareness of ozone levels is advisable, particularly during heatwaves. Maintaining indoor air quality through ventilation and air purification can be beneficial throughout the year, especially during periods of elevated pollution.
