Four seasonal patterns

Every CPCB city falls into one of four shapes. The mini-bar under each exemplar shows its 12-month AQI profile.

Winter-dominant

Sharp pollution peak in Nov–Feb driven by thermal inversions, post-monsoon biomass burning, festival fireworks and heating emissions.

SuratGujarat
Annual avg AQI 123
Monsoon-cleansed

Summer and winter are elevated; Jul–Sep monsoon rain washes particulates out of the air.

AgartalaTripura
Annual avg AQI 113
Bimodal

Two distinct peaks — typically winter plus a secondary dust or crop-burning spike.

PāliRajasthan
Annual avg AQI 123
Flat

Relatively uniform AQI through the year — usually coastal or southern cities with stable circulation.

BāgalkotKarnataka
Annual avg AQI 50

About this data

  • Source: CPCB station-level daily AQI readings, 20162024 (605,654 records across 551 stations in 214 cities).
  • Methodology: Daily AQI → unweighted monthly means → pattern classification via seasonal amplitude and coefficient of variation.
  • Coverage: Only cities with ≥10 months of observations are included. Cities without continuous CPCB monitoring are excluded.
